The Melghat Tiger Sanctuary was initially established in 1985, covering an area of 1597.23 sq. km., with the Gugarnal National Park being carved out of this sanctuary in 1987.

The name “Melghat” is derived from the words “Mel” meaning “meeting” and “ghat” meaning “mountain pass” or “gorge”. Melghat is situated on the meeting point of the Satpura and Ajanta hill ranges, and the Tapti River flows through the gorge between these two ranges. The name “Melghat” thus refers to the meeting point of these hill ranges and the gorge, where the Tapti River flows through, making it a unique geographical feature of the region.
