The name “Melghat” is derived from the words “Mel” meaning “meeting” and “ghat” meaning “mountain pass” or “gorge”. Melghat is situated on the meeting point of the Satpura and Ajanta hill ranges, and the Tapti River flows through the gorge between these two ranges. The name “Melghat” thus refers to the meeting point of these hill ranges and the gorge, where the Tapti River flows through, making it a unique geographical feature of the region.
